제20회 국제역사학 대회에서는 다음과 같은 유네스코 워크숍(UNESCO Workshops) 6개 세션을 개최하였다.

워크숍 4 '근대성의 역사'(The History of Modernity Reconsidered: East Asian Paths and Patterns)는 2004년 4월 초에 베이징에서 개최된 국제학술회의 '동아시아의 근대화과정'의 후속 부분이었다.  유럽, 미국, 아시아 등의 학자들이 참여한 이 세션에는 김경동 서울대 명예교수(발표)와 차하순 서강대 명예교수(논평)가 참가하였다.
